- "What drives this madness? You're like a blind worm tunneling your way through the soil. Deeper and deeper into the rotting bowels of the earth. Into the dark places better forgotten."
- ―William J. Blazkowicz exploring the dig site.[src]
Dig Site is the eighth and last chapter of Part II of Wolfenstein: The Old Blood. It shows two boss fights (one of them in Nightmare level) and the conclusion of Operation: Wolfstone.
Storyline
After climbing the entry of the graveyard, Blazkowicz saw the dig site surrounded by a green fog. There were not so many Nazis guarding the entry to the cataboms, all of them scared by the shamblers at the village. It was easy to get in. At same time Blazko was going deeper, couldn't stop thinking on what was Helga looking here. Just like on the surface, killing a Nazi turns him into a shambler, so had to be careful during the confrontations. The tunnels network led him to a forgotten crypt. Guards were already fighting when he arrived, it was an undead breakout.
B.J. killed every Nazi he encountered on his way to Helga until he reached some kind of hall with a button to active a mechanism. Wasn't other option to keep going, so he pushed it and a series of stone gates started to open slowly. However, a bonfire was also activated under his feet that released a new horde. Had to face the shamblers once again. Gates were taking too long, looked like the antechamber was going to be his grave. And when the path finally opened, he wasted no time and ran towards it.
His haste to enter didn't allow him to see the trap that Helga set for him at the last door. A chain grabbed him by the foot and pulled him upside down, at the mercy of Helga and Schreiner. Blazkowicz just could watch them discuss about the inner vault. Using the map he stole at the tavern, the Nazi archaeologist opened the seal on the stone and from the bottom, the secret of King Otto I arised. A big monster showed up and destroyed part of the chamber, the Flesh Golem. Helga didn't hesitate and tried to control the beast. At the beginning seem to work, even Schreiner was surprised, until she mentioned Otto in front of it.
The Golem got mad, threw Helga to the antechamber and ripped off the head of her pathetic supervisor. The only advantages B.J. had were that the Monstrosity was blind and remaining Nazis took all its attention when the showdown began. Used every last bullet, grenade and rocket to fire at its mouth, the origin of that green smoke that caused the destruction of Wulfburg. And so the Golem was finally defeated.
Blazko went back to Helga, who was about to die and holding the folder he's been searching. He ignored the body and took the folder, but when was about to leave, the cavern collapsed on him. The next day a rescue team arrived to ashes of the village. It was Fergus Reid along Allied paratroopers. Pippa had called them for extraction minutes before the earthquake. Mission was a success. Although the deads and destruction they finally located Deathshead's Compound. Now there was a chance to turn the tide. A last chance to win this war. Months later, preparations for the big day were completed. Combined forces of USAAF and RAF met at Kinloss Air Base, Scotland. They were going to launch everything they had to destroy Deathshead's research and kill the General himself. The world was counting on them and B.J. knew that. He was going to be part of it and face death one last time. Only after that, he could rest.
